Played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, John is the second season’s anchor; it’s his mysterious cause that drives his sons’ unyielding quest for retribution and paranormal justice. The Supernatural Season 2 follows the sons through a series of bizarre happenings as they look for answers surrounding the mysterious death of their mother, that of Sam’s girlfriend, and their elusive father’s strange departure.

Aside from all the shock and awe, there’s a real human element to Supernatural in the characters’ desire to keep their fledgling family intact through all the chaos. Sam and Dean are highly believable as squabbling brothers, who deep down, have a genuine affinity for each other. And rather than always ending on a high note, the creators keep things tense with cliffhangers that all but push the viewer over the edge. While not for the faint of heart, Supernatural Season 2 exemplifies the timeless struggle of good versus evil in spades, which should give it somewhat of a universal appeal, in spite of a little blood here and there.
